By afternoon the ward was spotless, organised and ready to receive a visit from some of the doctors who formed part of the Britannic’s sizeable surgical team. Iris had her nurses lined up and waiting as the white-coated surgeons approached. She was confident that they would make a very good impression.

‘Iris?’ called a familiar voice.

‘Dr Mayhew,’ she gasped, quickly reining in a too enthusiastic greeting of the smiling young doctor when she saw Sister Phelps glance back over her shoulder with narrowed eyes.

‘Fancy seeing you here, so good to have you on board…’ he whispered conspiratorially.

Iris spoke quietly to him as he hung back for a few moments while the rest of the doctors walked steadily down the ward, trying to keep pace with Sister Phelps as she forged ahead.

Iris spoke rapidly, aware of her junior nurses eavesdropping on every word. ‘I know we’re not meant to mingle on the decks and Matron has even suggested roping off some areas to try and stop fraternisation between the nurses and male crew… but I’ll look out for you in the dining room, see if we can make arrangements for a catch-up.’

He gave a nod and trotted after the group, glancing back with a cheeky grin once he’d regained the ground he’d lost. Iris stood with a spot of bright pink on each cheek, not daring to glance at any of her nurses. She murmured for them to listen to what the senior surgeon, Dr J.C. Hobbs, was saying about the advantages of using a Thomas splint to stabilise fractured femurs… Many lives had been saved by the simple metal device which reduced complications from a traumatic injury where much internal blood loss occurred. Iris had nursed patients with the revolutionary splint many times at Netley. It was a shame that it took a war to drive ahead such important advancements in medical technique.
